Good Afternoon. I want to provide information on what happened overnight to our school's small play lot.
At approximately 4:30 am, a car crashed into the LED sign and fence. I'm told there were no injuries. Crews are working on removing the sign, one part of the fence, and debris; they are also putting up a temporary fence. The small play lot will be locked and should not be used until all the debris is removed and repairs are completed. Please remind your students the small play lot is closed for repair.
Once repairs are completed and the area is ready for our students and community, I will let everyone know.
Budlong has just been notified that we are eligible to receive a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for school year 2019-2020.
The purpose of this grant is to increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption in elementary schools participating in NSLP. Fresh Fruit and Vegetable funds are used to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to children at no cost, during the school day outside of the reimbursable meal(s) periods.
We are excited to participate in this program in conjunction with our Healthy Schools mindset.
Swedish Covenant has notified us that tomorrow, March 7, 2019, Western Utility will be doing construction on Winona Ave which will result in partial shutdowns of the street and Northern sidewalk on Winona Ave. During this time there will be intermittent shutdowns to one lane on California Ave.
Work will start around 9:00 am and is expected to be completed by Thursday, March 14, 2019. There will only be access on Winona for ambulances, patient discharges and hospital deliveries so keep in mind they will not be letting us pass.
For access to the parking lot KISS-N-GO, you will have to go south on Lincoln, turn right on Carmen, and make another right on Washtenaw. All spots in the KISS-N-GO area will be reserved for staff during this construction. We understand that with the construction there will be little street parking available as well. Please plan accordingly so our students can be at school on time.
Volunteer opportunities for "Just Get Sleep, Budlong!" coming up this Sunday, March 3, 2019 are now open. We need help setting up in the morning before the sale, greeting during the sale from 10am-5pm, and help breaking down and cleaning up between 5-6pm.

Good Evening. The hospital will be conducting an active shooter drill on Wednesday morning from approximately 9:30 - 11am. Because of this, there will be an increased police presence near The Anderson Pavilion on Winona, and in the church's parking lot around arrival time Wednesday morning.
Again, this exercise at the hospital on Wednesday morning is only a drill.
Dear Budlong Families,
A parent reported today that his daughter was approached by an unknown woman as she stood at the crosswalk at Washtenaw on Foster Ave. on her way to school yesterday. The woman asked our student if she liked dogs. We estimate the time was between 8 and 8:10am. Our student described the woman as in her mid-fifties, having tan wrinkled skin, and wearing a black hooded coat and boots; her height is estimated to be about 5’ 6”.
The student is safe, and was not physically harmed. Teachers are talking with students today about general safe practices for walking to and from school:
We are in communication with the Chicago Police Department, and additional Budlong staff will be visible outside at both drop off and pickup starting immediately.
The safety of our students and our community is our top priority. Any additional information I receive will be shared. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Get your tickets now! The Daddy Daughter Dance is this Friday, 6-8pm. Tickets are only $15 in advance and $20 at the door. You can stop in the office anytime to purchase tickets. You can also send $15 with your student to school and we will send home a receipt.

As we enjoy break, and the much needed down time for everyone, especially our children, I wanted to be sure to pass along information on a topic that can impact us all. It is critical that we closely monitor what our students are watching and doing on the internet. From our interim counselor, Ms. McCarty:
School breaks typically involve more free time and independence from schedules and agendas than normal during the school year. We know children will spend time with friends and family and possibly have a little more screen time, too. We strongly recommend for parents to continue to monitor their child’s screen time, websites and contact(s) via apps on phones, I-pads, laptops and other technology. We want our families to be aware that parental/guardian supervision is a great deterrent when it comes to inappropriate behaviors, language and participation in so-called challenges that tell children to do things that might be unsafe or submit personal information or photos. Please be sure to check in with your child(ren) by having conversations about cyber safety and what they can do if they feel unsafe, or are contacted by someone they don’t know or is behaving inappropriately. Please know that we are always here to help with ideas and support for our families.
