[5/2 Principal's Letter]
Good Evening. This coming week is Teacher Appreciation Week, and to celebrate, FOB is compiling a video to let the teachers know how important teachers are, especially now, to our students and community. Thanks for submitting pics to FOB for the video, and I can't wait to see it.
Kindergarten enrollment will begin next week. The website is being updated to reflect the new electronic enrollment process. In short, new families will schedule a phone appointment with Ms. Ramirez and she will walk you through completing and submitting the required forms. Enrollment is for students new to Budlong; registration is for returning Budlong students and will be held in August.
We are working on a parent survey (in Arabic, Spanish, and Vietnamese also) regarding Remote Learning. Please be sure to complete it so we can get your feedback and make improvements and adjustments for our students. Please watch for the survey in your email early in the week.
CPS Principals received their school's 2020-21 budgets last week. More to come in the next few weeks.

[4/26 Principal's Letter]
Hello families! Here are some updates for week 3 of remote learning!
*In week 2 of remote learning we had 97% student engagement, our goal is 100%!
*Congratulations to Zoe Arroyo, our 7th grade Student of the Month
*Remote learning survey will be sent out soon for families to give us feedback on how Budlong remote learning is going and how we can make improvements for 4th quarter
*Welcome back to our Assistant Principal Mallory Bruno from her maternity leave
*Information for 2020-2021 Kindergarten Registration is coming soon
*Teachers will nominate students to read weekly Budlong announcements
*See information below to support our teacher Danielle Richmond's husband's film:
Titled Gemütlichkeit, the film chronicles the closing of the Chicago Brauhaus, a beloved neighborhood restaurant in Lincoln Square. It's a story about the value of gathering with family, friends and neighbors in shared space, which is something we all miss right now. We hope the movie offers a little distraction and something to look forward to during these lonely times.
Gemütlichkeit will premier online with a free, one-time-only stream at 7pm CST, April 30. You can watch on the film's Facebook page facebook.com/brauhausfilm or on the website brauhausfilm.com
In lieu of a rental fee, audiences can donate whatever amount they like to the Chicago Covid-19 Response Fund chicagocovid19responsefund.org or to DANK dankhaus.com/Donate.
Check out the trailer on the film's facebook page or website. Hope to see you on April 30!
No additional District correspondence has yet been sent, but we expect more information about semester grades and graduation soon. Budlong staff will be discussing ways to remotely honor our school traditions, like end of year celebrations, and how to make new ones as well. Despite the difficulty in knowing that schools are closed for the rest of the year, we still have much to be grateful for. Please stay tuned!
We are in week two of remote learning. All teachers have live instruction and we want students to be able to interact with their teachers and peers often, so it important that students be logged on during that time. Any questions or concerns? Please be sure to stay in touch with your child's teachers. We also have Report Card Conferences on Wednesday. Please respond to the Sign-up Genius link from your child's homeroom teacher to schedule a phone appointment.
Quick reminder to 8th grade families: high school selections are due 4/22. Please contact Ms. Chmiel with questions about schools and/or the process.
And here are this week's announcements:
I just finished watching Gov. Pritzker's daily update and he announced that all schools will be closed the rest of the school year. CPS has not sent out any information as of yet, so I do not have any details for Chicago and Budlong. Once CPS-specific information comes through, I will share.
I do know there will be many questions, and I will do my best to work through each of them with everyone. We want to make sure our students and families have what they need, both academically and emotionally.
Please take care.
We just finished day 2 of remote learning, and congratulations to all our students and families! This has been, and will continue to be an adjustment for all. We really appreciate your flexibility and support.
We want 100% of our students to engage in remote learning, and do so safely. Please remind your student that they need to follow the norms for discussion and participation set forth in their classrooms. No pictures or videos are to be taken of instruction, live or recorded. This is out of respect for everyone and to ensure safety of our school personnel and student body. If you have any questions, please refer to the CPS Acceptable Use Policy. It can be found on our website, along with other helpful information: budong.cps.edu. You can also email Budlongtech@gmail.com with any tech-related questions or concerns.
There will be no remote learning activities this Friday. It is a previously scheduled teacher institute day, and teachers will be working on third quarter grades. Now is the time for students to submit any missing work, as the current marking period closes on Friday. Please contact your student's teachers with any specific questions.
Report Card Pick-up will take place on April 22nd. Teachers will be sending out correspondence to all families regarding Sign-up Genius. You can select a phone appointment time with teachers. Please note: no remote learning activities will take place on 4/22.
Finally, here are the weekly announcements. I had fun, and I hope you enjoy them :)
Attached you will find our Remote Learning Plan, and it will go into effect on April 13th.
Budlong will be closed for the break, and as of today, please click here to find the closest food distribution site.
For 8th grade families, responses for high school selections are due by 4/22/20. Please email Ms. Chmiel with any questions.
I wish everyone a healthy and safe spring break, at home.

Good Saturday Afternoon.
Just a few updates today:
I will be emailing the official school-wide Budlong Remote Learning Plan on Monday to all families. It will also be posted on our website then, too. Teachers may send grade level plans before then though. Supporting our students and families is a critical aspect of learning during the school closure, so the plan will list the various ways (academic, social and emotional, and technical) help will be made available to families and students.
Budlong is no longer a food distribution site. Please click here for the closest site to you: https://schoolinfo.cps.edu/mealdistributionsites/index.html?timePeriod=spring
Students are officially on spring break! As a start to the break, we find another opportunity to spread smiles and love - another video to share with our community. A special thanks to Ms. Blum for creating the video, Ms. Cuevas for organizing the project, and to all staff for being so #budlongbeautiful. Please enjoy!
Please see the email below*. CPS is consolidating food distribution sites, and after this week, we will no longer be distributing food. Please see the link within the letter to find the school closest to you that will be open during the break and then starting April 13th.
Additionally, Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Friday announced a plan to give some struggling residents rent relief. The COVID-19 Housing Assistance Grant Program will use $2 million from the city’s Affordable Housing Opportunity Fund to give 2,000 Chicagoans $1,000 toward rent or mortgage payments.
Please click here for the following link to apply.
Applicants must show lost household income and be at or below 60 percent of the area median income, which is about $53,000 for a family of four. Here is a link for economic assistance from the city. The deadline is today.

Good Evening. A few items to share:
* CPS announced that all CPS will participate in Remote Learning for the duration of the school closure. By declaring a remote learning plan for each school, Remote Learning Days, Remote Learning Planning Days, and Act of God Days count as actual student attendance days. All of these days count toward the minimum length of the school year and absolutely do not need to be made up.
* Budlong's Remote Learning Plan will be designed to help families give structure to their student's day, streamline communication between teacher and home, and keep learning expectations consistent throughout the school closure. We want all our students to be connected to Budlong staff and one another, so they can learn. The plan will be shared with the community the week of April 6.
* Meals continue to be available at Budlong between 9 - 1pm each weekday, at door 9 on the Foster Street side. 470 meal kits were distributed last week. This link also has information on Chicago Food Bank Lookup by Zip Code.
* Chromebooks on loan to date: 55. Please contact your student's teacher if you are in need of a device for Remote Learning.
* Counselor Chmiel is available for students. This is the link to her webpage:
https://budlongcounselingresources.weebly.com/counseling-corner.html and she can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
* Here is part 1 of the #Budlongbeautiful Rainbow Challenge:
http://budlong.cps.edu/ Please scroll down to see the video.
* MAP and IAR standardized tests have been cancelled for the 2019-20 school year.
* Please share my email with any Budlong families who are not on the email list, and ask that they email me so I can add them.
Please tell your students we miss them, and love getting the pictures and videos. It keeps us all connected.
