Dear Budlong Families,
Over the past few weeks, destruction has hit numerous places around the world. As part of the global community, Budlong feels the pain of this devastation affecting our family, friends, and even that of strangers being directly impacted. We need to help, and to involve our students and school community, Friends of Budlong will be collecting donations toward hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico and earthquake relief efforts in Mexico. We will be donating to Global Giving:
Our goal is $100 per classroom, and collections will run from October 11-13. Prizes will be awarded to those classrooms who lead the fundraising efforts. More information is to come.
If you would like donate items and help locally, some staff members are working with La Casa Puertoriquena. They are accepting donations of batteries, flashlights, lanterns, canned goods, water, toiletries, diapers, and medications. They have two locations: 5911 W. Montrose Ave and 3924 W. Devon suite 202.
Thank you for contributing, and showing our students the importance of helping those in need.
Please take a few moments to complete this survey. It's a very quick survey, and will allow Friends of Budlong to hear your feedback on the upcoming school year's fundraising. We are always looking for volunteers to help with various events, so please do take this survey.
The October meeting will be on Monday, the 16th. Looking forward to see everyone there.
Last week was a fun-filled. Thank you to everyone who came out for Curriculum Night last Tuesday. We hope you enjoyed learning about the highlights planned for your student's class this year. As always use our website and parent portal to continue to communicate and share info throughout the year.

Happy Friday! Hard to believe we are two weeks in to the new school year, especially with this beautiful weather.
Please ask your student(s) about “Be your own Budlong Beautiful” and what they did as a class to celebrate ourselves. We are so very proud of our students and the uniqueness each one brings to our school! Please join us for Peace Day on 9/21 at 9:30 on the field for a celebration of Budlong’s beauty and as we pledge to be peaceful and compassionate individuals. See Ms. Cohn for more details, and if you are interested in helping.
Our Curriculum Night is Tuesday, 9/19, from 4- 6 pm. You are invited to come to learn about your child’s classroom and hear about school-wide focus points and initiatives. Hoping to see everyone there.

Our After School Care Program has started. It is open to our PM PK – third graders. It is $5/hour/student Monday – Friday. Please see Ms. Salky for more information.

A few exciting things to note:
Budlong is so proud of the diversity in our school, and to embrace everyone within the school community, we are announcing a school-wide campaign called, "Be your own kind of Budlong beautiful." Students and teachers will be working to build and articulate their ideas around this theme. Bulletin boards have been decorated celebrating all our students and their strengths. We will again be celebrating International Peace Day, tying into our theme, on September 21.
Curriculum night, for all our kinder through eighth grade families is scheduled for September 19, from 4-6 pm. Please mark your calendars. We will be offering CHIME Show Choir, "Budlong Beats", after school this year for our sixth through eighth graders. This program begins Wednesday, September 20. Our choir director, Mr. Thacker, will be hosting a parent and student Open House on Wednesday, September 13 and Friday, September 15 from 3:15-4:45 p.m. in the auditorium.
We are the recipients of three awards and want to share with everyone:
National Healthy Schools Award - a prestigious achievement that celebrates the hard work in creating a healthier school! Schools that receive this award meet best practice criteria established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and outlined in the Healthy Schools Program Framework of Best Practice Criteria.
Let's Move Active Schools Award - the nation’s top physical education and physical activity distinction for K-12 schools; to receive this distinction, a school must have met significant benchmarks in five areas: physical education; physical activity before and after school; physical activity during school; staff involvement; and family and community engagement.
Healthy CPS - this label demonstrates our commitment to a safe and healthy learning environment by offering daily access to physical activity, nutritious foods, and supports for students with chronic conditions. Healthy CPS aligns with Healthy Chicago, the city’s first public health agenda.
Our After School Care Program for our PK - third grade students started this week. If you are interested in the program, forms are located on our website or you can stop by the main office. The program offers care for students for one to two hours after school, and the cost if $5 per hour, per student.
If you were not able to attend our registration days, forms were sent home with your child. Please return these forms as soon as possible to your student's teacher. All fees must be paid directly to Ms. Custodio in the main office.
