Dear Budlong Families,
Budlong under the Stars is finally here!!!! In preparation for the event, dismissal will be a few minutes earlier than normal. Please see the times for your student, for Friday, 5/30:
For students picked up at dismissal, you can meet the students on the sidewalk side of the placards (instead of on the actual field). The field will be closed off until the event begins at 4pm. We are asking that all students leave school grounds at dismissal and return at 4 for the event.
If you haven't purchased your event wristbands yet, pre-sales end tomorrow at 8:45 AM.
Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow out on the field at 4pm, and have a great rest of the day!
Good Afternoon, and happy Monday. This is the time of year filled with performances and productions, showcasing our efforts and talents...and growth! So much is happening at Budlong, and here is a recap of just last week:
Congratulations to all our sixth - eighth grade students who participated in our Louder than a Bomb competition. Snaps all around to top performer seventh grader Lilah Bartolome for the reading of her original poem, "Common Sense." Thank you to Ms. Yu for organizing this hip performance.
The CHiMe show also highlighted Budlong musical talent, and thank you to all our kinder - fifth grade families who attended. CHiME instructor, Ms. Rose, really brought out the performer in all our students.
And Friday was our annual International Day, complete with Opening ceremonies and dances from across the globe, all starring Budlong students! Our students went around the world, from Spain to Japan, and Greece to The Philippines, and everywhere in between. Thank you again to all our families who brought food for Taste of Budlong. What a great way to close our International Day, and break bread with friends! This is a beautiful way to highlight and teach others about what makes us different, and similar :) Thank you to our International Committee for their dedication, collaboration, and organization. Bravo!
Friday night was the CHiMe Gala at City Winery where our Sounds and Beats students performed and rec'd a standing ovation. It was a touching moment, and our students represented not only CHiME well, but Budlong, too. I am so very proud of them.
Over the weekend, seventh grader, Yuri Kolovos, received the highest honor of Best Design for his science project Rescue Robot at the state competition. Way to go, Yuri!
The NWEA, MAP math and reading, testing window begins May 20th. Your child's teacher will be sharing schedules for individual classrooms.
Know anyone who has a child entering PK next year? The CPS PK application is now available at https://cys.mycopa.com/familyPortal/welcome.epl
Budlong will have five, yes five, full-day classrooms next year. Please let us know if you have any questions.
This week we continue to celebrate Autism Awareness with our annual Autism Walk. The weather cooperated and we had sunshine for almost all our walkers. Students competed in change wars and we will have the totals soon to see which classroom raised the most money. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this amazing cause to raise awareness around autism.
Our May LSC meeting is on 5/14 at 7:45 am, and our FOB is at 8:30 am on 5/17. All are welcome. We would love to see you there! Also on 5/17, Progress reports will be sent home with students.
Be sure to check out the calendar on our website for more dates http://budlong.cps.edu/school-calendar.html
Have a great week.
Dear Families, we are cancelling the Mother-Son Dance that was scheduled for Friday, May 10th. We apologize for the inconvenience, and late notice of this change in plans.
We wish you a Happy Mother's Day, and hope you enjoy time with your loved ones

Have a great weekend, and enjoy the sunshine.
Happy Spring Break! Some news to share as we begin our week off:
We recognized our students for exemplifying the Habits of Heart, Mind, and Work last Friday. Congratulations to all our recipients, and here's to third grader, Dakota, who so very well expresses his elation and surprise at being named for Habit of Heart by his teacher, Ms. Tovar. I am so proud of our students who continually show their Habits; they are acting with kindness and compassion, they diligently problem-solve, and they have a strong work ethic. Our students are leaders!
Congratulations to our eighth graders on their high school acceptances. A record number of Budlong students were offered a seat at Selective Enrollment High Schools, and other top tier high schools throughout CPS. Way to go!
The application for 2019-20 PK is due out by April 30th. Please check https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/sites/chicagoearlylearning/home.html for updates, and the application. I am excited to announce that all of our PK rooms will be full-day next year, and the Office of Early Childhood has promised a fifth room for 2019-20 due to high demand :)
Here are important dates for the quarter 4. Please pay special attention to graduation dates. Those were adjusted because of the two snow days added to the calendar.
And finally, despite the snow showers, we have sun shining brightly today! Enjoy a safe, restful, and peaceful spring break. See everyone on Monday, 4/22.
Happy Monday! Spring is in the air... I think, and more events are right around the corner. Mark your calendars for Budlong under the Stars, our annual fun fair, on May 31st. This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and the favorite of our students. Planning is underway and the first general meeting will be tomorrow at 3:30 in room 205. Committees are forming and we need you to make it a success. Hope to see you there :)
Congratulations to our very own seventh grader Yuri Kolovos for advancing to state in Science Fair for his project, "Best Design for Rescue Robot." Way to go, Yuri!
And if you didn't see Budlong's Got Talent Show Friday night, produced by Ms. Teresa, you missed an amazing showcase of student talent. Congratulations to all our performers and special recognition goes to:
And, for the 2019-20 school year, Budlong After Care will be extended to 6:15pm. We will also be taking students through fifth grade. Please help spread the word to prospective Budlong families.
Have a great week!
Good Afternoon. I want to provide information on what happened overnight to our school's small play lot.
At approximately 4:30 am, a car crashed into the LED sign and fence. I'm told there were no injuries. Crews are working on removing the sign, one part of the fence, and debris; they are also putting up a temporary fence. The small play lot will be locked and should not be used until all the debris is removed and repairs are completed. Please remind your students the small play lot is closed for repair.
Once repairs are completed and the area is ready for our students and community, I will let everyone know.
Budlong has just been notified that we are eligible to receive a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for school year 2019-2020.
The purpose of this grant is to increase fresh fruit and vegetable consumption in elementary schools participating in NSLP. Fresh Fruit and Vegetable funds are used to provide fresh fruits and vegetables to children at no cost, during the school day outside of the reimbursable meal(s) periods.
We are excited to participate in this program in conjunction with our Healthy Schools mindset.
Swedish Covenant has notified us that tomorrow, March 7, 2019, Western Utility will be doing construction on Winona Ave which will result in partial shutdowns of the street and Northern sidewalk on Winona Ave. During this time there will be intermittent shutdowns to one lane on California Ave.
Work will start around 9:00 am and is expected to be completed by Thursday, March 14, 2019. There will only be access on Winona for ambulances, patient discharges and hospital deliveries so keep in mind they will not be letting us pass.
For access to the parking lot KISS-N-GO, you will have to go south on Lincoln, turn right on Carmen, and make another right on Washtenaw. All spots in the KISS-N-GO area will be reserved for staff during this construction. We understand that with the construction there will be little street parking available as well. Please plan accordingly so our students can be at school on time.
Volunteer opportunities for "Just Get Sleep, Budlong!" coming up this Sunday, March 3, 2019 are now open. We need help setting up in the morning before the sale, greeting during the sale from 10am-5pm, and help breaking down and cleaning up between 5-6pm.
