Programs

Out-of-School Time (OST) Program

OST is a grant-funded program and led by our very own Budlong staff! For the fourth year in a row, Budlong staff bring unique activities to our students, including: academic support, enrichment, STEM, cultural and social development, recreation, sports, fitness and wellness, visual/performing arts, civic engagement, leadership skills, and college preparation. OST provides structured activities where learning takes place from 3:15-4:15 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, serving students from 2nd-8th grade at Budlong School.

Research shows that OST programs boost academic performance, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, provide a safe and structured environment, create a sense of belonging, improve social skills, and build confidence in students. The OST programs meet our students’ needs academically and socially. The students take ownership of producing and participating in activities that build interests and challenge students.

Purple Asparagus

Picture
Purple Asparagus is an award-winning nonprofit that educates children, families, and the community, about ways to eat that are both good for the body and the planet. It instills children with healthy eating habits. Children are able to explore foods in an entirely different way, learning about where their food comes from and how to prepare healthy, delicious recipes.

Aligning with common core curriculum, Purple Asparagus' Delicious Nutritious Adventures empower students to taste new foods, learn healthy recipes and refine literacy skills like reading and vocabulary. Written recipes go home with families to be cooked again and again, bringing everyone back to the table. Students also build relationships and collaborate by literally "breaking bread" together as they learn about healthy ways of living, a life long skills.

There is a team of chefs who come into our first grade classrooms monthly. The chefs demo the recipes, and then Budlong students make them and get to enjoy!

Dancing With Class

Budlong is in their 3rd year of receiving the Dancing with Class Grant. In previous years, Dancing with Class has partnered to work with the 7th and 8th grade students in a Dance around the World residency.  Connected to Budlong’s International Day, each middle school grade selects a different region to study in social studies, then learns an authentic dance associated with that region.  Students focus on both the artistic and cultural elements of the dances while building character, confidence, self-esteem and teamwork.

Dancing with Class has happily been a part of Budlong’s Peace Day Celebration for the past three years. With their Dance for Peace Circles curriculum, the Dancing with Class Teaching Artist provides a platform for 40 participants of all grade levels to come together to develop self-confidence, relationship skills and social awareness through a fun and uplifting group dance activity.

Girls in the Game

Picture
Girls in the Game is an after school program for elementary and middle school that works to give girls the confidence they need to develop into strong women. Girls face so many challenges, from social media pressure and violence to bullying and staying healthy. Girls in the Game After School programs provide a safe, positive, all-girl space where girls can be themselves. They use health education and leadership development activities to help girls build the skills they need to lead confident, happy lives. Once a week, girls meet after school to participate in a 90-minute sports, health and leadership program tailored to their needs.

Mission Propelle

The mission of the Mission Propelle Yoga program is to empower girls to know who they are, what they believe, and how to advocate for themselves. Girls are encouraged to embrace their truest selves, no matter how that manifests. The program is grounded in yoga: a discipline that is neither competitive nor comparative. Yoga encourages mindfulness and self-acceptance. The program complements yoga with a weekly reading drawn from Mission Propelle’s curriculum of 100+ storybooks that align to the Illinois Social-Emotional Learning Standards. The books showcase a diversity of female leaders - introverts, extroverts, science lovers, unicorn enthusiasts and beyond! The stories also showcase a diversity of family structures and living situations, inviting girls to see differences as sources of strength and beauty.

Small Bites

Picture
This in school program teaches our PK-8th grade students about nutrition and healthy cooking through a series of eight lessons combining nutrition and knife-free cooking. The lessons are taught by our classroom teachers and support Common Core State Standards in math and English. The lessons give students the opportunity to connect math, language arts and science concepts to hands-on experiences that provide tools to live longer, healthier lives. Upon completion of this class students will be able to make their own healthy snacks at home.

ChiME & ChiME Sounds and Beats

ChiME is partnering with Budlong Elementary to bring weekly music classes to students in Kindergarten through fifth grade and an after-school “Sounds and Beats” ensemble to students in sixth through eighth grade.  The program helps children develop self-confidence, self-expression, craftsmanship, creativity, and empathy through active music making.

ChiME’s weekly Classroom Music sessions consist of hands-on, engaging activities, in which students make music as one ensemble using a combination of their voices, percussion, keyboard, and string instruments. Throughout the year, students develop the ability to keep a steady beat, perform rhythms, master dynamic contrast, match and tune pitches, read written music, create their own musical ideas, and make artistic decisions to convey meaning in music. Students present their work in two performances each year.

The “Sounds and Beats” ensemble offers middle-school students an opportunity to create and perform music from the ground up in collaborative, experimental, and creative ways, using instruments, voice, and technology. Students improvise, compose, and arrange various musical works and engage in spontaneous music making, drawing inspiration from the environment. They also participate in performances and projects in and outside of school.

Northside College Prep Tutors

Picture
Northside College Prep (NSCP) students come to Budlong for two hours each week during their colloquium to work with our students.  NSCP students tutor their elementary school peers in reading and math. This partnership helps build confidence and communication skills for both Budlong and NSCP students.

Newcomer English Learners Group

Budlong’s BIlingual Lead Teacher, Dr. Michelle Daly, leads two newcomer groups during the school day for students who are new to the new country and/or to the English language. Dr. Daly works to build relationships among the newcomers and teaches foundational English skills such as letters, numbers, calendar, and conversational speech. Students love attending Dr. Daly’s groups and have forged strong friendships among peers from different language backgrounds.

Parent English Classes

Dr. Michelle Daly, leads Parent ESL Classes after-school throughout the year.  Dr. Daly builds community and relationships with parents from various language backgrounds to help build their English Language Proficiency.

Dear Budlong community,

We are excited to announce that two Budlong students have won the Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Award! Keya Dhungana’s “Frenemy” and Ava Rucker’s “Winter Stuff” won both spots in the 3rd grade category. Their poems can now be read on the Illinois Humanities website and they will be honored at a virtual ceremony later this month. The annual competition is open to all Illinois poets in grades K–12. This year’s winners were selected from a pool of 264 submissions representing 76 Illinois schools.

From Gabrielle Lyon, executive director of Illinois Humanities:
“The writers who submitted poems to the 2020 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards are members of a powerful community of Illinois writers of all ages. These young poets’ words can help us find our purpose and sense of possibility in the face of today’s hardships. These writers are the forerunners of the future and, in their words, we can find, perhaps, what is most important to pay attention to in our shared present.”
